How to Set Salesforce Field Mappings

Learn how to set Salesforce field mappings in Cognism to control exports, map data accurately, and manage update rules.

This article explains how to configure Salesforce field mappings so Cognism data is written to the correct fields when you export records from Cognism.

Field mappings apply to exports from both the Cognism web application and the Cognism Chrome Extension.

Prerequisites

Before you start, you should:

  • Be a Cognism admin
  • Have Salesforce connected to Cognism
  • Have completed the Salesforce integration setup
  • Understand how you want Cognism data to appear in Salesforce

Open Salesforce field mapping settings

  1. In Cognism, go to the setting pages and click Integrations in the left-hand menu.
  2. Select Salesforce.
  3. Click Setup or Configure.
  4. Follow the setup flow until you reach Field Mapping.

Field mappings are configured during the Salesforce integration setup process, or can be updated later using the Configure button.

Map Lead, Contact, and Account fields

Use the Field Mapping step to control how Cognism data maps to Salesforce fields.

You can configure mappings separately for:

  • Leads
  • Contacts
  • Accounts

Select the object you want to configure.

Add and manage field mappings

Within each object:

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the mapping list.
  2. Click Add Field.
  3. Choose one of the following options.

New field

Use New field to map a Cognism field to a Salesforce field.

Select a Cognism field, then choose the Salesforce field you want to map it to.

Static field

A Static field lets you map a fixed value to a Salesforce field.

The value is applied to every exported record and does not change.

A common example is mapping a static value such as Cognism to a Salesforce Lead Source field. We recommend creating a custom Salesforce field like cognism_source for this purpose.

Click Save to apply your mappings.

Set update rules

Each mapped field includes an update rule.

Update rules control how Cognism data is applied when a matching Salesforce record already exists.

You can choose to:

  • Apply if blank – Cognism updates the field only if it is empty in Salesforce
  • Overwrite – Cognism updates the field every time you export or sync

Choose update rules carefully, as they can affect reporting and data accuracy.

Important notes

  • Salesforce currency values are not converted during mapping.
    • For example, if Company Revenue is mapped to a GBP field, a value of $100,000 is written as GBP 100,000.

Expected results

After configuring Salesforce field mappings:

  • Cognism exports data into the correct Salesforce fields
  • Existing records are updated according to your update rules
  • Users see consistent behaviour when exporting from the web application or Chrome Extension

Next steps

  • Review your Salesforce custom fields
  • Check update rules for reporting accuracy
  • Test an export with a sample lead or contact
